The big 4.1 update!

Godot 4.1 is here and I have a load of new stuff!

Godot has changed over to a 4 month release cycle, which is nice and fast, meaning we have a bunch of improvements over version 4.0 you can read about in the official blog post.

I have updated the course to support the new version as well as adding a bunch of improvements and some major final touches!

Making a basic 3D platformer

The final audio topic for the 3D platformer chapter is finished! So you can follow along learning all the essentials of making a 3D project in Godot. This is a major accomplishment for me and means I can start work on the accompanying public youtube video in the near future.

My 3D art studies

In my last blog post I mentioned I have been developing my 3D art skills, and this has continued! I have a large project where I’ve been learning how to make lush environment art and assets with Blender and Godot I’m hoping to announce as a public demo soon.

This also means I’ve been able to bring new tech over to Godot 4 Beginners! I hope you enjoy the patches of grass I have littered over all the levels - do expect more environment improvements as I work on those skills.

Cards of Mallardy artwork

Cards of Mallardy has had a bunch of tweaks, but the most exciting improvement was I was able to procure some dedicated art for three new cards, see if you can find the: sorceress, fairy, and the fragile giant!

The scene transition autoload

One change I've been wanting to upload for a while is an improvement to how I transition levels.

There is a whole scene dedicated to changing levels that can be accessed globally and queues fading the screen in and out. It is really convenient and warrants yet another video for me to work on.

What’s next

As mentioned I have a bunch of videos to work on! The how to make a 3D platformer supplement, a devlog for the stylized art project, and a video about my new approach to scene transitions.

Course content wise I want to update the level selection cards, and bring my new tree foliage shader into the course.

Finally, writing wise with the platformer chapter done I can return to the documentation covering new features in Godot 4! With volumetric fog being at the top of the list i’m excited to write about.

If you want to support me further outside of the course, I now have a patreon! It helps me keep the lights on and focus on my free and public content.

Yeah! Reply back if you do, so I get notified. I was thinking of buying this, but I am also looking at this: https://www.udemy.com/course/create-a-hyper-casual-platformer-game-on-godot-40/
