Volumetric Fog and God Rays
It is time for another update! With the making a 3D platformer chapter finished I've been able to return to the demo scenes and make improvements to the Volumetric Fog example, as well as finish writing its associated guide. 🥳
The Fog Demo
It has been a long time since I first started working on the Volumetric Fog demo in the course and put out a video about how to get started using FogVolumes.
Since then, I have done a bunch of extra research into how Volumetric Fog works under the hood and how to set up God Rays, as well as improving the gamification of the course itself for scenes like the Decal level.
As such I have updated the Volumetric Fog demo to now include time trial challenges collecting Berries. When the player completes all the trials, they unlock a bonus level showing off God Rays (A full guide for creating that effect is in the written guide ✨).
The Fog Guide
Supplementing that demo update, the course gets its next topic in Chapter 3: Volumetric Fog!
The volumetric Fog chapter goes into detail on how to create God Rays in your games, as well as explaining many of the available controls for fog in the WorldEnvironment and ProjectSettings.
I also explain the way fog is used in the demo scene, using temporal reprojection to change its appearance and density as the player enters and exits shielded area.
Lastly the guide has a few useful links to Lectures, Documentation, and GitHub Pull Requests explaining how Volumetric Light Scattering is achieved.
What's next?
My focus is trained on getting Chapter 3 complete and finishing off more of the documentation for demos that are already available in the course. With that in mind I am focusing on the NavServer topic to explain how you can get set up with the built-in pathfinding tools, I have been experiencing some issues with edge cases in Particle Physics that are making me want to avoid that topic if I can until patches release or I have a good workaround.
As always thanks for reading and I will see you in the next one. 👋
