Get Started With Godot 4 in 2023

A New Chapter

Happy belated new year! For my first update in 2023 I have been hard at work on a particularly important chapter for the course:

Making a 3D Platformer in Godot 4.

This part of the course is an intended starting point for someone with the engine, walking through how you can set up a 3D platformer in intricate detail from the ground up.

For those with more experience it offers insight into my approach to the levels of the demo and Ducky character controller.

This chapter launches with 3 sections:

  •     Setting up a project in Godot 4.
  •     3D Movement.
  •     Handling camera controls.

This is enough to get someone up and running without prior Godot experience, something the course has needed for a long time.

There are 5 sections left for me to add:

  •     Jumping and world boundaries.
  •     Gridmaps and level blockouts.
  •     Animations and particles.
  •     Collectibles and sounds.
  •     Respawn points and objectives.

Once the chapter is finished, I can focus on supplementary video content to help people through setting up a 3D game in Godot 4.

What is next?

Over the new year the volume of engine updates has been staggering, sometimes multiple a week especially as we are now approaching Godot 4's first release candidate.

Now my focus is updating the course to catch up on that great backlog, then focusing on both videos and extra sections for this making a platformer chapter, so when Godot 4 officially releases there is a great starting tutorial for everyone to jump into.

Thanks for reading and see you in the next one!
